AKC Canine Good Citizen

Do you have a GOOD dog?? Then reward that good behavior and get your dog certified by enrolling in our CGC preparation and testing class!!

The AKC Canine Good Citizen Program is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the AKC.
The program continues to gain acceptance worldwide as the standard for well-trained dogs and responsible dog ownership. Per AKC standards "the purpose of the CGC Program is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it has been trained to be well behaved in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. The CGC Program welcomes both purebred and mixed breed dogs. The CGC Test is noncompetitive and dogs are not required to perform with the same precision required in formal obedience".

The ten test items that your dog will need to pass are:
  • Accepting a Friendly Stranger
  • Sitting Politely for Petting
  • Appearance and Grooming
  • Out for a Walk (Walking on a Loose Leash)
  • Walking Through a Crowd
  • Sit and Down on Command/Staying in Place
  • Coming When Called
  • Reaction to Another Dog
  • Reaction to Distractions
  • Supervised Separation

Canine Good Citizen group classes meet once a week for 4 weeks.

Pre-requisite: Canine Headquarters Beginning Obedience class unless we determine that your dog knows sufficient basic obedience..

Some insurance companies may allow a homeowners insurance discount when the dog in the home has passed the CGC test. Check with your agent!!
